Poroshenko trip to U.S. adds more fuel to the fire in Ukraine

19.09.2014 18:45

During a badly needed visit to U.S. Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko requested for more American weapons and finance assistance to quit with the rebels opposition in Eastern Ukraine. Poroshenko hold talks with Barack Obama and attended a joint Congress session.

"I urge you not to let Ukraine stand alone," Poroshenko said. "It is very simple: democracies must support each other." His speech was emotional and was accompanied by ovations. Vice President Biden, House Speaker John Boehner and Secretary of State John Kerry joined the cheering up.

Obama's reply was expected: "The people of the United States stand with the people of Ukraine," he said. However the US president argued that with more weapons the conflict would not be resolved. So, the new $53 million finance package includes $46 million of non-lethal military equipment, such as body armor, first-aid kits, binoculars, and other surveillance gear, about $7 million of humanitarian aid for displaced persons, reported Bloomberg.

The question is: why not on the contrary, more help to stop humanitarian catastrophe and for what purpose adding fuel to war fire in Eastern Ukraine is needed providing Kiev with more military equipment. The point is there're permanent contacts between the defense ministries of U.S. and Ukraine. That's why Ukrainian army is likely to have already got and to get combat military equipment directly from U.S. and its allies. By the way total U.S. aid to Ukraine for the year is now $291 million.

According to Bloomberg analysts, Barack Obama is trying to maintain the U.S. leading role in Ukrainian crisis. After his meeting with Poroshenko Obama said the U.S. will go on providing Ukraine with the means to ?build up effective security forces? and stabilize its economy.

The constant US-leaded Western support to Ukraine is certain to undermine the sensitive peaceful process in Ukraine, to provoke more hostilities in rebel regions. The humanitarian situation is on the edge of catastrophe and will be worsened taking into account the winter to be in. Moreover the general trend of US ruling game in Ukraine has already set the red line in Europe, restored the "Cold War" spirit and surely won't tackle key security world and regional issues.
