Russia's UN Envoy Slams 'Extremely Destructive' US Role in Ukraine Logjam

25.02.2015 14:07

Russia's permanent representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin has voiced hope that Washington will not interfere with the implementation of the Normandy process for the peaceful settlement of the situation in eastern Ukraine, news reports said.

Speaking at a UN Security Council session, Churkin specifically noted Washington's "extremely destructive" role in the Ukraine crisis. "One can only hope that the US will not put a wrench in the works of the Normandy process," Churkin said. He spoke almost two weeks after the Normandy format talks, which came amid new violence in eastern Ukraine's Donbas region, where government troops clashed with rebel militias.

During the February 12 talks, the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany adopted a series of measures stipulating, in particular, the introduction of a cease-fire in the Donbas region as of February 15, the withdrawal of heavy weapons and the creation of a security zone. The ceasefire regime in eastern Ukraine has generally been observed, according to the parties to the conflict and international monitors.
