USC: Mistral-Like Ships Could be Constructed in Russia
United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) president Alexei Rakhmanov said Russia's USC is capable and ready to build assault ships similar to the Mistral-class helicopter carriers in Russia. Everything depends on the decision of the country's Ministry of Defense.
"Of course, we will build them. There is nothing super hard about it. On the other hand, we understand that a well-defined request and a clear stance are required to do that," Rakhmanov said. The ships could be biult at St. Petersburg Baltic Shipyard facilities.
In 2011, Russia and France signed a two Mistral-class helicopter carriers deal. France had to deliver the first ship in mid-November 2014, but it never happened. French President Francois Hollande paused the delivery claiming Moscow to be involved into the Ukrainian crisis.
