Moscow Fully Backs Russian MoD on Incident With USS Donald Cook
The Kremlin fully supports the position of the Russian Defense Ministry in regard to its attack jets approaching the USS Donald Cook in the Baltic Sea, Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said Friday.
On Thursday, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the jets were holding planned training in the area of where the US warship was located and the flights were completed "in strict compliance with international laws on airspace over neutral waters."
"I'm pretty much leaning on being in agreement with the explanations that were given by the representatives of the Defense Ministry," Peskov said.
On Thursday, the US State Department said that State Secretary John Kerry would personally speak with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about the incident.
"We condemn this kind of behavior. It is reckless. It is provocative. It is dangerous. And under the rules of engagement that could have been a shoot-down," Kerry said in an interview with CNN Espanol and the Miami Herald.
