Fairy-tales of President Zelensky

05.02.2020 14:26

It looks like the Ukrainian political establishment cannot leave behind political scandals. And the louder scandals the better it is.

The recent visit of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to Poland came to a scandalous head . During commemorative event devoted to the 75th anniversary of Auschwitz liberation he stated that the USSR bears the responsibility of launching the Second World War. During his speech the President tried his best not to speak about the USSR and Red army, on the contrary he talked only about the Ukrainians who took part in liberation of the extermination camp. He did not forget to note that 9 million Ukrainians died during the Great Patriotic War. Apparently, the death of 11 million citizens from other USSR republics means nothing.

Zelensky did not mention that units participating in the Auschwitz liberations, such as the 1st Ukrainian front or 100th Lvov Division, are named not based on the ethnic composition but geographical. Above-stated units, as well as most of them in the army, were multinational just as the USSR population.
Mr.Zelensky, during the commemoration, did not forget to mention that every 4thperson among 6 million victims of Holocaust  was of Ukrainian descend. However it does not fit with the glorification of Stepan Bandera and people like him in Ukraine.

Obviously, the President Zelensky speech was approved by the President of Poland Andrzej Duda, who is infamous for his russophobia. By the way both of the Presidents were not allowed to make a speech at Holocaust commemorate ceremony in Israel, which says a lot. The director of agency of social communications Sergey Belashko stated that Mr. Zelensky was reading his text haltingly as if he saw it for the first time. It could have been mistakes by his speechwriters, but this is not an excuse in such situation.

The assessments of many Ukrainian political and public persons are more categorical. People’s deputy from the «Servant of People» party Buzhansky, for example, is sincerely outraged by the President’s statements. He said: «How could you possibly say that and then expect to improve relations with Russia, put an end to the Donbass conflict and return back Crimea?» Politician then suggested Zelensky for his next speech to state that «on the eve of the Great Patriotic War the dissolution of Czechoslovakia happened». The Ukraine President’s first assistant Andrey Yermak said, that Zelensky speech in Poland was unsuccessful. Ukrainian journalist Vasilets was even more succinct. He said, that Volodymyr Zelensky literally «trampled on the memory of his grandfather, who took part in the war».

But the first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk, for example, tried to acquit Zelensky by saying that Stalin and Hitler had a secret meeting in Lvov. But of course, this story has nothing in common with reality.
