«Circus performance» about Crimea
The leader of the extremist organization «The Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People», banned in Russia, Refat Chubarov decided to draw attention to himself. He called on his supporters to cross the border with Crimea on May 2 at the «Chongar» checkpoint as part of the «March of dignity» campaign.
According to Chubarov's idea, the «March of dignity» should become an action of non-violent resistance, which will allow international organizations to express their support to Ukraine on the issue of Crimea belonging. The action is also intended to support Crimean Tatars who are allegedly persecuted by the Russian authorities.
Refat Chubarov also said that the organizers plan to appeal to other countries and international organizations to take part in the «March». The participation of the OSCE Special monitoring mission in Ukraine, PACE, the OSCE parliamentary Assembly and the NATO parliamentary Assembly is planned. The proposal to join the action will be sent to the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada.
Refat Chubarov has long been known for his hostile rhetoric against Russia. In 2018, he stated that Moscow should give Kiev the bridge over the Kerch Strait as compensation for the «occupation» of Crimea. In addition, Chubarov proposed to celebrate at the official level the 450th anniversary of the Moscow burning so as to mark the anniversary of the Crimean Khan Devlet-Giray campaign to Russia in 1571.
According to experts and observers, «The Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People» goes through a deep crisis. It was almost completely deprived of funding. The Crimean Tatar propaganda channel ATR, owned by Lenur Islyamov, is on the verge of closure. In fact, the «national» Crimean Tatar battalions fled.
Chubarov just tries to draw attention to himself and the «The Mejlis». Oblivion is a bad luck. And there may be some public relations disaster. After the statement of Chubarov Ruslan Balbek, state Duma Deputy from the Crimea, recalled his previous experience of organizing such actions. According to him, «Chubarov decided to remind the Crimeans about himself and put a broken record about the «March to the Crimean Peninsula». As the experience of recent years has shown, all these marches took place no further than neutral territory, and each time there were less and less participants. Last time Chubarov came to the border of Crimea with twenty supporters. Having chanted anti-Russian slogans a hundred meters from the Russian border checkpoint, the «protesters» failed to attract any attention.
The march on May 2 is also likely to turn into an «internal action» in the area of the Ukrainian side of the Chongar Peninsula. It is possible, of course, that the actions of Ukrainian extremists are aimed at Russian security forces which will have to stop the illegal march along the Crimean road. And then international community will report that Russia «suppress freedom and punish cruelly the peaceful Crimean Tatars».
By the way, the Crimean Tatars themselves warned Chubarov against rash actions. The head of the Crimean regional national and cultural autonomy of the Crimean Tatars, Eyvaz Umerov, said that any actions aimed at violating the Russian border will be stopped. According to him, the march is intended to «throw a certain number of people on the bayonets» to return the topic of Crimea to the information agenda. However, the Crimean Tatars are not going to respond to such provocations. They are well aware that the Ukrainian government, as well as the odious Chubarov, does not care about the Crimean Tatars. They are only interested in their own selfish goals.
