There are Few Unresolved Arctic Legal Issues
In an interview with Russian Peacekeeper, Jan-Gunnar Winter, Director of Norwegian Polar Institute, pointed out that the Arctic is rich in resources: oil, gas, fish, and minerals.
"It can be used for shipping and tourism activity. The accessibility to Arctic is better due to climate change," he said.
According to Mr. Winter, the challenge is how to extract, explore these resources in a sustainable way. The issues are mainly related to oil and gas transporting ship accidents and balance between development and environment.
"There are very few unresolved legal issues: the continental shelf issue, the border between Canada and Greenland, sailing problem. We managed to settled border problem with Russia and Barents Sea," he added.
